Land Acknowledgement and
Equity Statement

(To be read at the beginning of every MCPC General and Board Meeting)

We acknowledge that MCPC is located in Oakland, formerly known as Huchiun, on the unceded land of the Ohlone People. We wish to pay respect to Ohlone leaders both past and present.

We understand that without conscious and corrective action, naming this injustice can become an empty platitude. Therefore, in addition to our acknowledgement statement, we commit to the following:

  • Teaching our MCPC community about the important work of the Sogorea Te Land Trust and their efforts to rematriate the land and protect local sacred sites;

  • Forging relationships with the Sogorea Te Land Trust team through solidarity actions (protest, sign making, etc.) and volunteerism (when covid protocols allow);

We recognize the colonization of Huchiun as part of the persisting legacy of White Supremacy, its values, and unreconciled power disparities. Further, we recognize racism persists at all levels of society, and we denounce race-based hate and violence. We strive to be an anti-racist organization, and are undertaking the following actions towards this ideal:

  • Adherence to and active exploration of the core goals of anti-bias education - namely, the goals of honoring identities, celebrating diversity, teaching about justice, and empowering members of our community to take action against injustice;

  • Expanding the existing standards for on-site adult participation to ensure that MCPC remains accessible to as many families as possible;

  • Providing on-going education to our community members around anti-racism, microagressions, and the pervasiveness of white supremacist values in mainstream education;

  • Organizing opportunities for MCPC families to volunteer and grow in partnership with other community organizations;

  • Hosting fundraising events that are environmentally sound and serve chosen community partners in addition to the MCPC community;

  • Creating clear protocol for engaging in restorative conversations and offering constructive feedback in general meetings;

  • Setting up an anti-racism advisory board for guidance in these efforts

  • And more to come!
